Empowering Lives Through Personal Experience
Alan has been in the construction industry for over 40 years.
During that time, he has seen many changes.
The hard natured work place and environment has softened and people are more aware of mental health policies, but this hasn't stopped the fact that we are three times higher the national average of any industry for suicide.
At the age of 55, Alan was struck down with a disease that affects 5-10 people per million per year.
Spinal dural arteriovenous fistulas (SDAVF) is a cruel disease that cripples a person.
The neurosurgeons said that he would make a recovery, but they did not mention that during surgery an amount of glue used for the embolisation procedure seeped into the spinal cord, causing a stroke.
Then came the story of reaching the depths of despair and darkness to fighting his way back to living as normal a life as possible and telling his story to make people aware of the fact that they are not alone and life if there to be lived.
